“We view the LiFE Award as an honor that recognizes ourefforts to promote financial literacy throughout our community. We want it toserve as a reminder that we are not stopping here and that we remain dedicatedto helping our community every step of the way.” — Hector Sanchez

For Hector Sanchez, Vice President and Branch Manager ofTexas National Bank's Mission location, accepting the award on behalf of thebank was both an honor and a reflection of the organization's long-standingcommitment to the communities it serves. He noted that being recognized at thestatewide level made the achievement especially meaningful and reinforced theimportance of continuing the bank's financial education efforts.

Building Financial Wellness Through Education

At the center of the award-winning initiative is the beliefthat financial wellness should be accessible, practical and easy to understand. That philosophy has been championed by Rey Garcia, Chief Credit Officer atTexas National Bank, who helped develop the bank's Financial Wellness Programwhile also leading the institution's community development strategy as part ofits mission as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI).

Garcia's passion for financial wellness is both professionaland personal. Before encouraging others to improve their financial health, hefirst applied many of the program's principles to his own finances. Thatexperience strengthened his belief that meaningful progress comes fromconsistent, intentional steps rather than complicated financial strategies.

“It doesn't have to be complicated. It may look differentfor everyone, but I think the roadmap is consistent. It's about takingdeliberate steps toward addressing the different pillars we have laid out. Itstarts with building your skills and education, which leads to the secondpillar of financial wellness: earning power and income.” — Rey Garcia

Garcia encourages individuals to focus on foundationalfinancial habits such as building financial knowledge, increasing earningpotential, saving consistently, managing debt responsibly and protecting wealth.Together, these principles create a roadmap that can help individuals andfamilies achieve long-term financial stability.

Reaching Communities Where They Are

As a CDFI serving the Rio Grande Valley, Texas National Bankrecognizes the importance of providing financial education and bankingresources to underserved communities. According to Garcia, creating value meansinvesting in the people and communities the bank serves.

That mission is carried out through responsible financialproducts, bilingual resources and educational initiatives designed to meetpeople where they are. Garcia is particularly proud of the Financial Wellnessteam led by Sanchez, which has grown from small community presentations into aprogram that has reached more than a thousand students and community members.Through presentations, digital tools and practical financial guidance, the teamhelps individuals make informed financial decisions while encouraging importantconversations about money at home.

The LiFE Award serves as recognition of both the program’sinnovation and the bank's deeper commitment to strengthening the communities itserves. Garcia believes that one of the greatest barriers facing manyindividuals is a lack of financial awareness, and he sees education as one ofthe most effective ways to build confidence and create opportunities for futuregenerations.

A Lasting Impact Beyond the Classroom

One experience stands out for Sanchez when reflecting on theimpact of financial education. During what was expected to be a small classroompresentation at a local school, he found himself speaking to a group ofstudents with disabilities who were preparing to transition from high schoolinto the workforce.

The students quickly turned the session into one of the mostengaging presentations he had ever led. They asked thoughtful questions aboutretirement planning, homeownership, vehicle purchases and other long-termfinancial goals. Their curiosity and forward-thinking mindset left a lastingimpression on him.

“You could tell the students were already thinking about thechallenges they may face. They were thinking ahead and asking questions aboutretirement, buying a home and how many vehicles they should own. I left feelinginspired because it reminded me why we do what we do.” — Hector Sanchez

For Sanchez, the experience reinforced the broader purposeof financial wellness education: empowering people to plan confidently fortheir future regardless of their circumstances. He believes that with the rightresources, partnerships and support systems, there are no limits to whatindividuals can achieve.

Helping Students Make Informed Financial Decisions

Part of Texas National Bank's educational efforts includehelping students understand the financial realities associated with highereducation. Garcia highlighted the bank's "Our Money Matters(OMM)"tool as an important starting point for students learning financial concepts, particularly those related to paying for college.

While banks typically do not serve as primary providers ofcollege funding, Garcia focuses on helping students understand credit, debt andresponsible borrowing. He emphasizes the importance of understanding howinterest accumulates on student loans and how to evaluate which types of debtsupport long-term goals.

Through the TNB Foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of TexasNational Bank, high school seniors also have access to scholarshipopportunities and guidance related to FAFSA, student aid and additionalscholarship resources. The goal is not to direct students toward a particulareducational path, but to ensure they fully understand the financialimplications of their decisions and can choose options that align with theirpersonal and career goals.

Looking Ahead

For Sanchez, financial wellness begins with a commitment tolifelong learning. He encourages individuals to continue educating themselves, ask questions and seek guidance whenever needed. He believes many people arewilling to help when approached, regardless of their title or position.

He also stresses the importance of maintaining a long-termperspective when working toward financial independence and recognizes theimportant role community banks and local organizations play in supporting thatjourney through education, outreach and community involvement.

“We want to ensure that our community receives the rightinformation. We have resources available and our doors are always open to helpanswer questions. We encourage people to keep educating themselves and to neverstop learning. Don't be afraid to pick up the phone and ask for help.” — HectorSanchez

Garcia echoed with the importance of surrounding yourself withpeople who share your values and commitment to service. He praised the cultureof collaboration within the organization and expressed appreciation forSanchez’s leadership and dedication to financial wellness.

He also encouraged community members to connect with TexasNational Bank through its website, social media channels or local branches, emphasizing that accessibility, hospitality and relationship-building remaincentral to the bank's approach. As Garcia noted, the organization's guidingprinciple remains simple: "We Are Friendly."

“Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Get started andbegin taking deliberate steps forward. I am incredibly proud of our team andgrateful for the opportunity to serve our community. We are here to help atTexas National Bank, and we invite anyone to walk through our doors and connectwith us.” — Rey Garcia‍
